TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 19 BETTING PREVIEW
The route goes either up or down during the entire day - with a total elevation gain of almost 2,000 meters - and it also features two categorised climbs with gentle gradients:
- Cote du Bois de Lionge (4th category, 1.9km at 5.7%)
- Cote d'Ivory (3rd category, 2.3km at 5.9%)
The second ascent crests with 26 kilometers to go. The riders then descent to Arbois before the final 21.8 kilometres are played out on the flat.
The last kilometer goes up a 2.6% incline, which could take the sting out of some sprinters.
Stage 19 Favourites
If this stage was scheduled in the first week of the race it would have been a 100% sprinter's chance. But after three weeks of hard race, pure sprinters will have heavy legs and their teams will be too fatigued to chase the escapers.
Wout Van Aert would have been the clear favourite here but the Belgian has returned home as his wife is giving a birth.
His fierce rival Mathieu van Der Poel will now install himself as the odds on favourite for the stage win. The Dutchman has mainly run in support of Jasper Philipsen so far, but he might have a bit of freedom on Friday. All other possible contenders will run "against" MVDP, and this could be a handicap.
Riders such as Matej Mohoric, Magnus Cort Nielsen, Soren Kragh Andersen, Matteo Trentin and Mads Pedersen are likely to have targeted this stage and they can surely mark van Der Poel and surprise him. Pedersen has already won a slightly uphill sprint earlier in this race.
Dark horses?
OWe wouldn't rule out Jasper Philipsen. The best sprinter of this year's edition is able to go with the escapers and survive the last climb. If he is in the front group, it will be very hard to beat the Belgian.
Another rider to keep an eye on is Cristophe Laporte. With Van Aert now retired, the Jumbo Visma has the chance to pursue another stage win with Laporte two stages at the Criterium du Dauphinè and the Gent-Wevelgem earlier this season.
More long-shots?
Don't underestimate the likes of Fred Wright, Nils Politt, Jasper Suyven, Oliver Naesen, Alberto Bettiol, Biniam Girmay, and the veterans Peter Sagan and Julian Alaphilippe.
