TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 19 BETTING PREVIEW

Three stages left - two hard days in the Alps, followed by a conclusive Tuime Trial on Stage 21.

The theme of stage 19 will be high altitude since all three of the day’s climbs peak at over 2,000m above sea level.

A steady opening 20km will do little to prepare the peloton for several hours of pain to follow. After the intermediate sprint in Guillestre, the riders will have to climb two 2,000m-plus HC ascents before the final 1st category ascent up to the finish at the ski resort Isola 2000.

The Col de Vars is a 18.8 kilometres climb at 5.7% and the Cime de la Bonette is a colossus of 22.9 kilometres with an average gradient of 6.9%.

At 2,802 metres, it’s the highest point of the Tour de France.

The climb includes steep pitches of over 9% and tops off with a final kilometre at 11% gradient.

After a long descent to Saint-Etienne-De-Tinèe, a long valley road will follow before the climb to Isola 2000, a 16.1 km monster with an average gradient of 7.1% that reaches an elevation matching its name of 2024 meters.

The first half of the climb is the toughest, especially the first two kilometres at 10% and 10.5% repectively.

A profile like this will surely ensure fireworks between those fighting it out for the yellow jersey but another winning breakaway can't be ruled out.

Stage 19 Favourites

Of course, Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogaçar are the odds-on favorites to win the stage. Should the former decide to put the current yellow jersey and the rest of the peloton under pressure on the Cime de la Bonette, the chance for the breakaway will be very slim.

Pogaçar looked the most brilliant rider in the third and final week, while Vingegaard's approximate preparation for this Tour - because of the crash at the Tour of the Basque Country back in April - has seen the Dane struggling to match Pogaçar attacks on final climbs. A fully-fit Vingegaard would have been a formidable foe on such terrain.

Remco Evenepoel will try to take advantage of the battle between the big two, hoping to reduce the gap ahead of the final time-trial, where he will be the favorite #1. Evenepoel left both Pogaçar and Vingegaard behind on Wednesday's final climb and could benefit from high altitude..

Dark horses?

Other riders that can profit from a tight marking between Pogaçar and Vingegaard are Giulio Ciccone, Carlos Rodriguez, Mikel Landa, Derek Gee and Matteo Jorgenson, while Pogaçar's team-mates Joao Almeida and Adam Yates could be sent in the breakaway to force Team Visma-Lease a Bike to chase.

Jai Hindley has attacked on Thursday and might be fatigued as well as Wednesday's winner Richard Carapaz, Ben Healy, Michael Kwiatkowski, Geraint Thomas, Valentin Madouas, Oier Lazkano and Louis Meintjes.

Other riders such as David Gaudu and Wout Poels look completely out of form, Matej Mohoric has been nowhere so far while Tobias Johannessen crashed on Thursday and his fitness should be assessed.

Hence, the probable contenders we selected in case of breakaway are Romain Bardet, Felix Gall, Enric Mas, Guillaume Martin, and Laurens De Plus.

Egan Bernal could be a contender if he has recovered from the illnesses he had, since the high-altitude climbs should also suit the Colombian - as well as Carlos Verona and Harold Tejada.
