TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 2 BETTING PREVIEW
The main factor on stage 2 will be the wind. This is an are where crosswind and echelons are very frequent, particularly in the final 18km over the dramatic – and completely exposed – Great Belt bridges.
Jumbo-Visma and Ineos are masters at exploiting crosswinds, but the real experts are Quickstep-Alpha Vinyl.
Anyway, early July is the time of year with the lowest average wind speeds.
Rider will also climb three category four climbs, usuful to award the first KOM point of this edition and one more reason for hopeful riders to break away.
- Climb 1, Côte d'Asnæs Indelukke: 6.3% average grade
- Climb 2, Côte d'Høve Stræde: 5% average grade
- Climb 3, Côte de Kårup Strandbakke: 4.9% average
We expect a high pace right from the start. This stage could turn in an epic fight where breakaways, sprinters, General Classification favourites and their teams all must give it all they have got.
Team captains will need to rely on the collective strength of their team and the devotion of their teammates.
The side winds can break the peloton up into many groups and 'surviving' sprinters will fight for the stage win..
Stage 2 Favourites
Fabio Jakobsen (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl) and Dylan Groenewegen (Team BikeExchange-Jayco) are considered the top two sprinters ahead of this Tour de France and occupy the first two positions in the betting.
Mads Pedersen is likely to be in the mix in case of echelons. He has prepared for such a scenario and will be highly motivated to win the stage and hopefully win the yellow jersey on home soil.
We also expect Wout Van Aert (Jumbo–Visma) to be a contender, regardless the peloton breaks up or not. The Belgian drove an echelon with this teammates Christophe Laporte and Primoz Roglic at Paris-Nice and can be considered a specialist.
Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix), Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal), and Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) are next in the betting while the likes of Peter Sagan (TotalEnergies), Alexander Kristoff (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux), Michael Matthews (Team BikeExchange-Jayco), Bryan Coquard (Cofidis), and Matthieu Van Der Poel (Alpecin–Fenix) can't be ruled out in this kind of stages.
Looking for a long shot?
Alberto Dainese, Danny Van Poppel, Filippo Ganna, Jasper Stuyven and Tom Pidcock all have legs and courage to upset the odds.Other Danish riders that could target the maillot jaune in this way are Magnus Cort-Nielsen and Søren Kragh Andersen while the likes of Kasper Asgreen and Mikkel Bjerg will have to hope for favourable echelons.
