TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 3 BETTING PREVIEW
After two stages with a combined 5,500m of elevation gain, there is relatively little climbing on the roads between Piacenza (Plaisance) and Torino (Turin).
Along the way, the peloton will tackle three Category 4 climbs:
- Côte de Tortone - Fausto Coppi (1.1km at 6.3%), cat. 4, km 70.8
- Côte de Barbaresco (1.5km at 6.5%), cat. 4, km 156.1
- Côte de Sommariva Perno (3.1km at 4.6%), cat. 4, km 181.4.
Neither of these ascents can disrupt the sprinters’ plans..
A breakaway will probably escape during the first hour of the stage, but all the sprinters’ teams are fresh and eager to give their captains their first opportunity to win a stage.
There are two sharp bends in the final kilometers but then it’s a long straightaway to the line that will favor those who can rely upon the best leadouts.
Stage 3 Favourites
Jasper Philipsen is the clear favorite in any potential bunch sprint, expecially because Jonathan Milan and Tim Merier are not competing. The Belgian haswon six stages over the past two editions of the TDF and also won the green jersey 12 months ago. With Mathieu van der Poel leading him out, Philipsen will be tough to beat.
Mads Pedersen looks like the strongest potential challenger to Philipsen. He is a former World Champion and has six Grand Tour stage win to his name. Considering waht he did in Stage 1, his form should be OK.
Arnaud De Lie has been the only rider so far able to knock Philipsen from the top spot, beating him in the final sprint at the Belgium National Championships.
The route will also suit Wout Van Aert but there is the possibility that the Belgian is not yet going to try and contest stage wins.
Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco Alula) is a genuine candidate for a place on the podium. He has one of the strongest leadouts of the Tour and has been in impressive form this season.
Any possible surprise?
Fabio Jakobsen disappointed at the Giro d'Italia and faced trouble racing in the heat on the opening two stages of the Tour so far.
Mark Cavendish is shooting for that all-time record of 35 Tour stage victories but the Manx Missile doesn't possess the speed to beat the new generation of sprinters on a regular day.
Sam Bennett, Alexander Kristoff, Biniam Girmay, Phil Bauhaus, and Bryan Coquard are the other riders that will fight for a Top 5 placement.
