TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 4 BETTING PREVIEW
On stage 4 of the Grand Boucle the riders tackle the high mountains for the first time. Never before has the Tour climbed so high so early in its history.
The road rises as soon as the flag drops in Pinerolo, with a 39.9km leading to the summit of Sestrières, located 50.4km after the start.
The Col de Montgenèvre is also on the menu but the GC battle will start on the Col Du Galibier, a legendary 23 km ascent with an average gradient of 5.1% and an altitude of 2,642 metres.
While 19km of descent remains after the summit, those first over the top have a huge chance of the stage win and, potentially, the yellow jersey.
- Sestrières (39.9km at 3.7%) cat. 2, km 50.4
- Col de Montgenèvre (8.3km at 5.9%) cat. 2, km 71.1
- Col du Galibier - Souvenir Henri Desgrange (23km at 5.1%), cat. HC, km 120.7
This will be the first opportunity for the favorites to test themselves in the high mountains but it doesn't mean that a breakaway can't succeed. This is only Stage 4, and there’s a good chance the teams of the Tour’s overall contenders will let the breakaway build up a large advantage and settle the stage win among themselves.
Stage 4 Favourites
Tadej Pogaçar showed on Stage 2 that he has retained his stellar Giro form and is the rightful favourite on Tuesday.
Jonas Vingegaard was able to hold on to Pogaçar's tail on the Cote de San Luca, but should wait for reaching the peak of his form and for steeper climbs.
Current Yellow Jersey Richard Carapaz has been below par since joining team EF but looked in great shape and super motivated. At altitude, he should be at his best, so we expect him to be among the best (excluding Pogaçar and Vingegaard).
Remco Evenepoel struggled to stick with the favourites in the initial move on Stage 2, but did claw his way back on the run-in to the finish. He is good in his current position and not losing time to the main rivals here will be his main objective.
Primoz Roglic should try to race conservatively, follow the wheels of other GC contenders.
Tom Pidcock will not compete for the GC Classification this year but he could have an eye on the Yellow Jersey and the Galibier descent could help him at the end of the day.
Dark horses?
There are a lot of riders that could be considered as potential attackers. Egan Bernal may enjoy the high altitude while quality climbers like Simon Yates, Felix Gall, Enric Mas and Giulio Ciccone may try to create the gap on the first ascents and defend it on the Galibier.
Other riders to watch for the stage win include Derek Gee - who finished third overall at the recent Critérium du Dauphiné - Warren Barguil, Romain Grégoire, and Julien Bernard.
The likes Romain Bardet, Pello Bilbao and Santiago Buitrago can't be overlooked, as well ass Carlos Verona, David Gaudu, Joao Almeida, Oscar Onley, Oier Lazkano, Kevin Vauquelin and Frank Van De Broek.
We would also keep an eye on Tobias Johannessen and Wout Poels, two riders that have legs and experience to upset the odds.
We expect to see Norway’s Jonas Abrahamsen escaping the group in the early kilometers but we would be surprised to see him first on the top of the Galibier.
