TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 5 BETTING PREVIEW
In total, around 20km of cobbles must be navigated by the peloton with punctures and crashes a near-certainty. The cobbles are all concentrated in the final 80km, and this will put the peloton under huge stress.
The stage will also shake-up the General Classification picture, as it happened in 2014 when Vincenzo Nibali attacked the race favorite Chris Froome on his way to win that year's Tour De France.
As the saying goes, you can’t win the Tour on the cobblestones, but you can lose it.
Although the stage finishes in Arenberg, the famous Trouée d’Arenberg is not included in the race. Nor are other sectors from hell, such as Mons-en-Pévèle and Carrefour de l’Arbre.
Stage 5 Favourites
Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) is the odds-on favorite to win on Wednesday. He will be looking to take the stage and the yellow jersey across the unruly pavé between Lille Métropole and Arenberg Porte du Hainaut.
Other cyclo-cross stars such as Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) are among the most fancied riders. Van Aert has impressively won Stage 4, he could be fatigued but the way he created the gap over the last ascent has shown he is the strongest rider in the peloton at the momnet.
Dylan Van Baarle (Ineos Grenadiers) won this year's Paris-Roubaix edition with a 1'47" gap over 2nd placed Wout Van Aert. The Dutchman, of course, is considered a specialist as well as Stefan Kung (Groupama - FDJ) who finished 3rd, and Florian Vermeersch (2nd in the 2021 Roubaix race behind Sonny Colbrelli).
Dark horses?
Other riders that could perform well on cobbles are Christophe Laporte, Alexander Kristoff, Jasper Stuyven and the former Yellow Jersey Yves Lampaert.
Breakaway and cobblestone specialists will also fancy their chances of anticipating the favorites.
Hence, take a look at Matej Mohoric, Taco van Der Hoorn, Florian Senechal, Peter Sagan, Nils Politt, Philippe Gilbert and Jonas Rutsch.
