TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 5 BETTING PREVIEW

Shortly after the start the riders tackle the Côte de Haut de Bach – 2.1 kilometres long and a perfect launch base for the breakaway.

The first classified climb appears more than 70 kilometres into the race. It’s the HC Category Col de Soudet, a 15.2 kilometres long climb with an average of 7.2%.

The riders descend onto a flat phase of some 15 kilometres and tackle the Col d’Ichère, a 4.2 km long 3rd category climb at 7%, the penultimate of the day.

The 1st Category Col de Marie Blanque is the pièce de résistance on the fifth day of Le Tour. The 7.7 kilometres ascent is averaging 8.6%. The final kilometers of this climb average over 12%, so this will be the deciding point of the day. Bonus seconds are on offer at the top of this climb.

The climb ends with 18.5 kilometers to go, and the descent will be quite technical, 11.5 kilometers long. After the fast descent, a 7km flat run-in to the finish.

Stage 5 Favourites

Even if this stage might see GC contenders try to earn pivotal seconds, we expect a breakaway to succeed.

The Col de Soudet – comes at the midway point of Wednesday’s stage, and it could prove to be a launchpad for stage hunters to go on the attack.

The team of the race leader might also decide to give the yellow jersey away to save energy.

Stage hunters have been very quiet during the first four days at this Tour de France. The first two stages saw climbers and puncheurs fighting for the win, while the 3rd and 4th stage finished with a mass sprint.

Neilson Powless was among the riders that tried to succeed and he looked brilliant in both the first two stages. We expect him to be in the breakaway to earn KOM points on the Col de Soudet.

Magnus Cort Nielsen is a nine-time Grand Tour stage winner and Wednesday’s test looks an excellent fit for the Dane.

Victor Lafay could again be up there after winning last Sunday's stage with an impressive progression in the final km. On Saturday he was the only rider who kept the pace of Pogaçar and Vingegaard, so he is the man of the moment.

We could also find Wout Van Aert in the breakaway, and who knows... the Belgian could go for personal glory rather than for helping his captain Jonas Vingegaard.

Tom Pidcock is another rider we can't rule out. He has good climbing skills and is the best descender of the peloton.

Dylan Teuns, Matej Mohoric, Valentin Madouas, Ruben Guerreiro, Matteo Jorgenson, Rui Costa, Felix Gall, Pello Bilbao and Giulio Ciccone are other breakaway hopefuls, while Julian Alaphilippe looked out of form.

What about GC contenders?

Whilst usually the first mountain stage at the Tour de France is blocked, it should not be the case here. UAE may want to make this a hard stage and try to cause trouble to their rivals, especially the Jumbo-Visma team.

This could result in another duel between Tadej Pogaçar and Jonas Vingegaard, with the former the odds-on favourite to win at Laruns.

Adam Yates could play gooseberry, as he did on Stage 1. But Pogaçar will surely not like this scenario.

Mattias Skjelmose, Jai Hindley, Mikel Landa, David Gaudu, Simon Yates and Romain Bardet also look suited for this stage but they are still too close in the General Classification.
