TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 6 BETTING PREVIEW
This will be a traditional classics day, where the riders who want to fight for the stage win will have to save their one bullet to the perfect timing to have a chance at winning the stage.
The roads go either up or down during the entire day. The climbs are never long, nor steep, but the endless succession is sure to wear the peloton out.
The last 20km are up and down with the fourth-category Côte de Montigny-sur-Chiers, an unclassified climb, the third-category Côte de Pulventeux (800m at 12.3%) that crests with 5.3km to go, and the 1.6-kilometre finishing climb up the Côte des Religieuses (5.8% average gradient, with a ramp at 11% halfway up).
The Tour previously tackled the Côte des Religieuses on Stage 3 of the Tour de France 2017. Peter Sagan managed to out-sprint Michael Matthews, Dan Martin, and Greg van Avermaet that day.
The route suits attackers and puncheurs and may have been designed with Julian Alaphilippe. Anyway, the Frenchman didn' recovered from a bad crash at the Liege-Bastogne-Liegi and is not taking part in the Tour De France this year..
Stage 6 Favourites
With Julian Alaphilippe out injured, the likes of Wout Van Aert, Mathieu Van Der Poel, Michael Matthews and Peter Sagan are the top candidates.
Among them, Van Aert and Sagan looked the most brilliant in the first week of the Tour. The Belgian finished second in the first three stage and impressively won Stage 4, consolidating his Yellow Jersey. The Slovakian has recorded a 6th, 4th and 5th place in the last three stages.
Anyway, both suffered a crash on Wednesday and Van Aert had a very exhausting day as he had to work hard for his captain in the last 30 kilometers.
Van Der Poel looked far from his best form, even if many think the Dutchman was saving his legs for this stage.
GC contenders are also expected to battle but they will surely have a look on Thursday's stage, the uphill finish at La Planche des Belles Filles.
Jonas Vingegaard, Adam Yates and Geraint Thomas looked brilliant and tried to chase Van Aert on the Cap Blanc-Nez on Tuesday while Tadej Pogaçar was phenomenal on the cobbles on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Primoz Roglic dislocated his shoulder yesterday and was forced to fix it by himself by the side of the road. He won't be 100% fit for sure.
Other likely contenders could be Tom Pidcock, Michael Woord, Matej Mohoric and Marc Hirschi, both able to escape on the final ascent.
Dark horses?
The challenging finale could be suited for riders such as Alberto Bettiol, Tim Wellens, Magnus Cort Nielsen, Romain Bardet, Dylan Theuns and Aleksander Vlasov.
The likes of Andrea Bagioli, Guillaume Martin, Thibaut Pinot, Gianni Moscon, Michael Woods and Victor Lafay are our selected long-shots (riders with very high odds).
