TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 8 BETTING PREVIEW

Sandwiched between two mountain stages, this stage could very well end up being contested by a strong breakaway.

There is hardly a metre of flat in the unspoilt region right next to the Swiss border, although the uphill sections are not hard.

The deciding point comes after the riders descend towards Lake Geneva and then hit the final ascent.

What could have been a routine flat finish in the home of the International Olympic Committee is spiced up with a demanding climb (4.8km at 4.6%) with pitches at 12%.

Stage 8 Favourites

This final climb is very similar to the Mûr-de-Bretagne, where Mathieu van der Poel took a stage win and the maillot jaune in last year’s Tour de France.

Anyway, the Dutchman has been below his swashbuckling best at this Tour and has suggested he will abandon the Tour de France if he doesn't soon show signs of improvement after a long week of suffering.

This leaves Wout Van Aert and Michael Matthews as logical favorites. The Belgian has been amazing in every stage so far, wearing the Yellow Jersey from stage 2 to stage 6. The Australian looked brilliant in Longwy, finishing right behind stage winner Tadej Pogaçar.

Pogaçar will probably take it easy, after a huge effort on La Planche Des Belles Filles and ahead of Sunday's mountain stage but many other GC contenders could try to bother the leader.

Adam Yates, David Gaudu, Jonas Vingegaard, Romain Bardet and Nairo Quintana look the best suited for this finale while Geraint Thomas, Enric Mas, Rigoberto Uran and Aleksandr Vlasov will run defensively to avoid losing time.

Dark horses?

Other than Van Aert and Matthews, other puncheurs have their eyes on this punchy finale: Matej Mohoric, Thomas Pidcock, Alexis Vuillermoz, Alberto Bettiol, Dylan Teuns, Bauke Mollema, Tim Wellens and Benoit Cosnefroy.

Swiss riders are expected to chase a home victory - Stefan Kung and Stefan Bissegger could go in the early breakaway while Marc Hirschi has never been seen so far and looked the shadow of himself.

The likes Andrea Bagioli, Thibaut Pinot, Giulio Ciccone, Lennard Kamna, Warren Barguil, Ruben Guerreiro and Victor Lafay are the long-shots we would recommend for this stage..Stage 8- Tour De France 2021
