Stage 8 of the 2023 Tour de France, a 200 km run from Libourne to Limoges, is transition day as the peloton heads to the Massif Central. A 5% uphill in the last 700 meters might mean this is not a pure sprinters’ day. Can Jasper Philipsen win also this stage? TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 8 BETTING PREVIEW
Sandwiched between two mountain stages, this stage could very well end up being contested by a strong breakaway.
There is hardly a metre of flat in the unspoilt region right next to the Swiss border, although the uphill sections are not hard.
The deciding point comes after the riders descend towards Lake Geneva and then hit the final ascent.
What could have been a routine flat finish in the home of the International Olympic Committee is spiced up with a demanding climb (4.8km at 4.6%) with pitches at 12%.
Stage 8 Favourites
The riders return to Limoges for the first time since 2016. That day, Marcel Kittel won a grind of an uphill sprint, narrowly beating Bryan Coquard. The former is now retired while the latter is still in activity and also recorded a couple of Top 10 placements this week. This year, Coquard won a similar uphill grind in the Tour Down Under, his first world tour success.
Anyway, the odds-on favourite will be Jasper Philipsen. He has already recorded a hat-trick of victories in the first three mass sprints (Stage 3, 4 and 7) and has the legs to survive the little gradient in the final kilometer.
Wout Van Aert will be Philipsen's main contender. The Belgian will make the race harder thanks to Christophe Laporte and other teammates. At the end of the day, he might be the less fatigued sprinter and take his first stage win.
Mathieu Van Der Poel is likely to play the last-man role for Jasper Philipsen. Should Philipsen be tired or out of contention, the Dutchman will be Alpecin's first choice and surely a contender here.
Mads Pedersen will also love this finish. He can't compete with Philipsen on flat sprints but some gradients here can only help him to reduce the gap from the best sprinter.
Biniam Girmay has struggled in bunch sprints so far but the this kind of final is perfect form him, expecially if Mike Teunissen can get him in a good position in the last 300 meters.
Caleb Ewan is another sprinter that can win hilly sprints on his best days. We saw him performing very well on the Poggio (Milan - Sanremo) and the gradients will be similar here. Should the Australian be in good position, he could be a serious contender.
Dark horses?
Mark Cavendish is in good form but he doesn't like uphill sprints, so we expect the Brit to struggle a bit. Phil Bauhaus, Jordi Meeus, Dylan Groenewegen and Fabio Jakobsen also look beaten in this kind of finish.
The likes of Alex Aranburu, Fred Wright, Corbin Strong and Luca Mozzato will target a Top 10 finish here while riders such as Julian Alaphilippe, Alberto Bettiol, Matej Mohoric, Kasper Asgreen, Remi Cavagna, Magnus Cort Nielsen, Tom Pidcock, Peter Sagan and Christophe Laporte himself might play their cards by anticipating the sprint and attack in the final km.
