TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 8 BETTING PREVIEW
Five categorised climbs along the way mean many riders will see the 183.4km route from Semur-en-Auxois to Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises as a shot at a stage win.The riders start in Semur-en-Auxois for a stage of 183.4 kilometers with 2,400 meters of elevation.
The five categorised climbs could encourage hill-loving breakaway riders to put some fatigue into the sprint teams’ domestiques.
- 24.1 km: CÔTE DE VITTEAUX (2.0 km at 7.3%)
- 32.5 km: CÔTE DE VILLY-EN-AUXOIS (2.4 km at 5.5%)
- 38.8 km: CÔTE DE VERREY-SOUS-SALMAISE (2.9 km at 6.0%)
- 96.7 km: CÔTE DE SANTENOGE (1.1 km at 8.1%)
- 122.4 km: CÔTE GIEY-SUR-AUJON (1.2 km at 8.4%)
Two things are noteworthy. The finale is super straight forward, the are no corners in the last 5 kilometers. Plus, the final km is slightly uphill, meaning that riders must wait the final 200 meters to start sprinting.
This is the least sprint-friendly of the flat stages on this year’s course. Moreover, there is definetely a potential for echelons in this part of the French territory.Stage 8 Favourites
Lotto Dstny's Arnaud De Lie is the favourite for stage eight. He has recently won the national road race championship in Belgium and has an excellent record in one-day events.
Last year's green jersey Jasper Philipsen needs the win more than most, having failed to justify favouritism in all three bunch sprints so far.
Current green jersey Biniam Girmay has surely targeted this stage as it suits him the most.
Just like Girmay and Philipsen, Mads Pedersen boasts both the climbing abilities and the fast finish. He did suffer a crash on stage five, but seems to have recovered well and should be one of the main contenders here.
Other pure sprinters such as Dylan Groenewegen, Phil Bauhaus, Sam Bennett, Fernando Gaviria, Mark Cavendish and Fabio Jakobsen might find this stage too hard for them.
Dark horses?
Wout Van Aert took the time trial very easy and this might mean that he has targeted this stage. He is a strong all rounder and will be in the mix should his team gives him the green light.
Other riders that can performer well on a such stage profile are Michael Matthews, Maxim Van Gils, Bryan Coquard, Ben Healy, Magnus Cort, Marijn Van Den Berg, Mike Teunissen and Alex Aranburu.
Another interesting long-shot could be Bahrain-Victorious’ Fred Wright. In case of successful breakaway, the 2023 British men’s road race champion could be a good long shot to be on as well as French champions Paul Lapeira, Matej Mohoric, Alberto Bettiol and Frank Van Den Broek.
