TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 9 BETTING PREVIEW
Stage 9 will be the first authentic mountain test for GC contenders, although it’s not exactly a summit showdown what with that downhill segment ahead of the final gentle rise to the line at Chatel.
Furthermore, climbers who are outside the general classification can go for a long breakaway for the polka-dot jersey to collect points and target a stage win.
The Col des Mosses (13.3 kilometres at 4.1%) and the Col de la Croix (8.8 kilometres at 7.6%) are quite demanding ascents and the latter will be crested with 61km to go ahead of the race descending to Aigle.
The deciding point will be the Pas de Morgins (15.4 kilometres at 6.1%) where stage hunters, and eventually GC contenders, will go full gas before a 6 kilometres descent takes them to the foot of the last uphill section of the day, a 3.5km climb (at 4%) to the finish line in Chatel.
Stage 9 Favourites
It's very likely that a breakaway group with a good balance of riders could well take advantage of this comparative gentle entry into the Alps.
Riders like Bauke Mollema, Lennard Kamna, Giulio Ciccone, Michael Storer, Tim Wellens, Maximilian Schachmann and Matej Mohoric are waiting for this stage since Day 1 of the Tour.
Mollema, Kamna and Mohoric were the most brilliant riders among them so far while Wout Van Aert is literally flying at the moment and can't be ruled out neither for this stage.
Any possible surprise?
Other possible attackers could be Andreas Leknessund, Jacob Fuglsang, Dylan Teuns, Patrick Konrad, Bob Jungels, Louis Meintjes, Nils Politt, Nelson Oliveira, Luis Leon Sanchez, Ruben Ruerreiro and Ben O'Connor.Nairo Quintana would have been suited for this kind of stage, but he hasn't lost enough time by this point. The same applies to Alexandr Vlasov, Michael Woods and Damiano Caruso.
French hopes are pinned on Alexis Vuillermoz, Pierre Rolland, Thibaut Pinot, Tony Gallopin, Valentin Madouas, Pierre Latour and Warren Barguil while Guillaume Martin, Romain Bardet and David Gaudu are too close to the leader in the General Classification and will not be allowed to escape.
