TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 9 BETTING PREVIEW
Here comes the gravel! Stage 9 will be a tense day of constant small climbs and 14 stretches of gravel roads through the Champagne vineyards, mostly in the final third of the route. The roads are similar to the ones of the iconic Italian race, Strade-Bianche, with the last unpaved road appearing 10 kilometres before the line.
It should be a fun and unpredictable stage, probably featuring a double battle - for the stage win and for the yellow jersey.
Technical problems and crashes could happen anytime. All GC riders and stage contenders will want to enter each sector as best positioned as possible, and there simply isn't space for everyone.
Stage 9 Favourites
Current leader Tadej Pogacar will relish this stage, having twice won the very similar Italian Strade Bianche race. His team-mates will probably struggle to help him on the dusty races, meaning that the Slovenian will have to do it all by himself.
Cyclo-cross specialists Mathieu Van der Poel and Wout van Aert are expected to renew their rivalry. They have won one Stade Bianche each in the last four editions and will be surely in the mix.
The other winner of the iconic Italian race is Tom Pidcock. The Brit has been below par thus far but he could have targeted this stage and saved energies for it.
Jonas Vingegaard is not as good as Pogaçar on gravel roads but the Dane can rely upon a stronger team that includes Wout van Aert, Christophe Laporte, Matteo Jorgenson, Tiesj Benoot and Jan Tratnik.
Moreover, we would not be surprised to see Remco Evenepoel attack late in the day because this is the kind of terrain where he has advantage over some of his rivals.
Any possible surprise?
Matej Mohoric, a former gravel World Champion, will certainly aim for the win as well as Jasper Philipsen, who is still chasing his first stage win at this Tour, and Jasper Stuyven, who may have the freedom to chase it for Lidl-Trek if he is on a good day.
The list of the possibile contenders is very long.
Fast riders such as Arnaud De Lie, Biniam Girmay and Michael Matthews; classic specialists such as Alberto Bettiol, Maxim Van Gils, Jonas Abrahamsen, Davide Ballerini and Victor Campenaerts; time-trialists such as Stefan Kung, Stefan Bissegger and Kevin Vauquelin.
