What happened in the first two fights?
Dustin Poirier defeated Conor McGregor earlier this year as the American knocked out the Notorious, becoming the first man to defeat him via KO/TKO. Former two-weight world champion McGregor lamented his inactivity after suffering a third defeat in only his second UFC appearance since October 2018
Actually, it was a rematch as the Irish fighter beat the Diamond at UFC 178 back in 2014 when McGregor took the win in less than two minutes by knockout.
Poirier turned down the opportunity for a lightweight title fight while instead opting for the payday and accolades associated with a third clash against the Irishman McGregor.
The third fight will end the trilogy and decide who will fight current UFC Lightweight champion Charles Oliveira later this year.
There have been 13 trilogies that have been fought exclusively in the UFC. Entering the third fight, the fighter who wins the second fight also wins the third 70% of the time.
Dustin Poirier v Conor McGregor 3: Betting Preview
Between the two fights against Poirier, Conor McGregor went on to become interim featherweight champion by defeating Chad Mendes and ended Jose Aldo’s long undisputed title run and unbeaten streak in mere seconds. The Irishman split a pair of legendary bouts with Nate Diaz before stopping Eddie Alvarez to add UFC lightweight title to his resume. The Dubliner then pursued a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather before returning unsuccessfully to get the lightweight belt back from the unbeaten and now retired Khabib Nurmagomedov. McGregor fought once in 2020, knocking out Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in under a minute.
Dustin Poirier moved up to 155 after the loss to McGregor and got his momentum back. The Diamond recorded 10 consecutive wins, including the prestigious scalps of Anthony Pettis, Eddie Alvarez and Justin Gaethje. He also defeated Max Halloway at UFC 236 to win the interim lightweight belt but he lost the title shot against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242. Then he win in comeback fashion over Dan Hooker at UFC Vegas 4 in June 2020. When Poirier met again McGregor in January of this year, the American executed the perfect game plan, neutralizing his opponent with leg kicks before scoring a devastating second-round TKO.
McGregor truly has one path to victory and that's a knockout. Of his 22 career wins, 19 have come by way of knockout with only two decisions and one submission. He should avoid the Poirier leg-kick strategy that proved his undoing last time out. The American will impose a similar game plan to the one he utilized in their second bout, but with further emphasis on getting this fight to the ground, where he holds a distinct advantage.
Poirier vs McGregor 3 Odds & Price BoostsPoirier is a 17/20 favourite with SportingIndex, while Conor McGregor is a 11/4 underdog with SportNation in the latest Poirier vs. McGregor 3 odds.

Our Poirier vs McGregor Predictions
McGregor has compiled a 3-3 record in his last six UFC appearances and has only one win since 2017. The Irishman’s insatiable lust for success, money and lifestyle has unquestionably softened his fighting personality and allowed him to transition more into a celebrity rather than a fighter.
Poirier possesses some of the most fluid boxing skills in MMA today and complements these abilities with a solid ground attack.
As a result we back Poirier to win the fight. We believe the American can stop McGregor in round 2 or 3, probably via submission this time.
