RUGBY WORLD CUP 2015: BETTING PREVIEW
New Zealand will start as favorites to retain their Rugby World Cup crown having claimed the trophy on home soil four years ago. Anyway, the All Blacks have never won the World Cup in the northern hemisphere. The All Blacks have continued to dominate the Rugby Championship. Having suffered a shock defeat at the hands of the Wallabies to lose the Rugby Championship on August 8th, New Zealand responded with a crushing 41-13 demolition of their trans-Tasman rivals a week later
England hosts this year’s Rugby World Cup but their chances have not been helped by an unenviable draw. Alongside them in Pool A will be two-time champions Australia, as well as Wales. The English have already beaten Wales 21-16 earlier this year and they also defeated Australia 26-17 in November and with the home crowd roaring behind the team, we expect them to escape a very tough group.
South Africa are the obvious favourites to win the weakest pool of the tournament, as they have Samoa, USA and Japan in their group. Anyway, they enter the World Cup after their most disappointing Rugby Championship to date. They lost their three games with two of those being on home soil. It's hard to say how the Springboks will do this World Cup. We expect them to top their pool, but we don't think their are strong enough to reach the final.
Australia in the Pool of Death with England and Wales. They looked a long shot to contend for the title just a few months ago, but have raised expectations considerably by winning the southern hemisphere’s Rugby Championship with wins over both New Zealand and South Africa. The Wallabies have one of the best attacking backlines in international rugby with the likes of Adam Ashley-Cooper, Israel Folau and Henry Speight.
Ireland secured their 13th Six Nations title in 2015 and are arguably offered their best chance to date of posting a maiden World Cup competition triumph in 2015. O’Driscoll has retired but Cian Healy, O’Connell, Sean O’Brien and Rob Kearney now form a formidable spine, while in Conor Murray and Jonathan Sexton they have a brains trust inferior to none.
Four years ago, France lost by a single point to New Zealand in front of the All Blacks' home crowd in the final at Auckland's Eden Park. The French have a combined record of 79-12 over Canada, Italy and Romania and we expect Les Blues to battle with Ireland in order top top the Pool D.
In the 2011 World Cup, Wales went into the tournament as 80/1 underdogs after finishing 4th in the 2011 Six Nations, but only a controversial Sam Warburton sending-off in a 9-8 loss to France prevented them from meeting a nervous New Zealand in the final. They have another tough task here as they will face England (the hosting nation) and Australia in the Pool A. Warren Gatland’s men have won just one of their last 15 matches against the Aussies!
Scotland finished last and winless in the Six Nations back in March. Their lowest points cam in a 22-19 home defeat to Italy. The Tartan Army enter the tournament on the back of a 40-10 loss to Ireland at Murrayfield two weeks ago. Scotland are the dark horses of the tournament and will trouble South Africa for the top spot of the pool B.
There are plenty of minnows who will be looking to make their mark, too. Among them, the United States are better prepared and arguably better equipped than ever before. Italy are another team who look capable to cause major upsets in the Pool D.
