TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 10 BETTING PREVIEW
For the next two days the high mountains are off the menu. It will be just the calm before the storm though, because on Thursday they will be taking on the infamous climb up Mont Ventoux.Anyway, Stage 10 starts with a Category 1 climb which will help a breakaway to get established and then its pretty flat until a short but reasonably steep Cat 3 climb which tops out around 7km from the finish, a climb of just under two kilometres, but at 6.5% that could see pure sprinters such as Mark Cavendish, Andre Greipel and Marcel Kittel distanced.
The final hills on this stage tilt the balance in Peter Sagan's favour. He is looking to retake the lead in the Green Jersey classification so you can expect him to be aggressive.
Mark Cavendish has won three sprint stages so far but the presence of that final climb will test him. We expect "Cannonball" and Marcel Kittel both to lose precious ground.
Andre Greipel has struggled somewhat in this years race but he's the most likely sprinter to survive on the last climb. If Kittel and Cavendish both struggle up the category 3 climb then the Lotto-Soudal sprinter has a decent shout at winning the stage.
The Category 3 climb at the end of the stage should pose no problems for riders such as Greg Van Avermaet, Michael Matthews, Julian Alaphilippe, Edvald Boasson Hagen and Alexander Kristoff.
For Frenchmen Bryan Coquard, it has been a very pleasing Tour to date with two podium finishes to date and he is getting even closer to a stage win.
Michael Matthews had a difficult first week, crashing on both Stage 1 and Stage 2 but his fifth on the challenging uphill finish into Cherbourg shown that his legs are quite good.
Alexander Kristoff's form is getting better, he should have no problems on the category 3 climb and play his cards with the other sprinters.
Alejandro Valverde is surprisingly backable at very high odds despite he is suited for this kind of finale, given that the Spaniard is a good climber, a skilled descender and a fast sprinter. He is definetely worth a bet.
Another dangerous rider for this kind of stage is the Aussie Simon Gerrans while John Degenkolb, who had a dream season last year winning the Monuments Milan-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix, had a nightmarish crash earlier this season and he is still looking for the best form.
In case a breakaway stays away, the likes of Tony Martin, Jasper Stuyven, Rui Costa, Michael Albasini, Fabian Cancellara and Stephen Cummings are our favourite candidates given their ability to make long range attacks stick. There may also be an early scrap for the King Of Mountain points on offer on the Port d’Envalira – expect to see a polka-dot clad Rafal Majka and Thibaut Pinot in the escape.
