TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 13 BETTING PREVIEW

The GC contenders have had their fun and now they need a breather as this is a suitably hard course to give the breakaways a chance or a reduced bunch sprint.

The stage profile is fairly flat until the intermediate sprint point. After that though, riders have to climb climbs two Category 4 - Cote de la Pomparie (2.8km, 5%) and Cote de la Selve (3.9km, 3.7%) -  and one Category 3 climbs - Cote de Saint-Cirgue (3.8km, 5.8%). The finish line is on the summit of the uncategorized Cote Saint-Pierre (570m, 9.6%), too steep for pure sprinters as Mark Cavendish and André Greipel.

Peter Sagan is very suited for this kind of finale. The Slovakian need to earn points for the Green Jersey and could try to enter the right breakaway or attack in the last Km.

The short ramp in Rodez is tailor-made for John Degenkolb and Greg Van Avermaet too as well as Stage 8 winner Alexis Vuillermoz and Joaquim Rodriguez. Anyway, the latter should be tired after his long breakaway, finished with a stage win, on Thursday. Also Alejandro Valverde should have less energy than riders who saved their legs on the Pyrenees.

Davide Cimolai was very strong in a similar uphill sprint in Paris-Nice where he took the biggest win of his career and there is no doubt that this stage is a big goal for him. Bryan Coquard loves this kind of uphill sprint and proved his class in the recent Route du Sud where he won in a similar kind of finish.

A wildcard for this stage is Michael Matthews while Tony Gallopin is in good position in the GC and this makes impossible for him to go on his planned attacks but he could still take a win.

We haven’t seen much from Filippo Pozzato in this Tour but he is a possible contender even if the Italian doesn’t seem to be at his best. We therefore have to look at attacking riders like Thomas Voeckler and Sylvain Chavanel.

The last 570 meter could just be too much for Edwald Boasson-Hagen but the Norwegian could be involved in a breakaway. His compatriot Alexander Kristoff will definitely try his hand in this sprint and he should be able to survive the late climbs. He loves uphill sprints but this is probably a bit too steep for him.

Other riders to watch on today’s stage include Ramunas Navardauskas, Zdenek Stybar, Jan Bakelants, Arnaud Demare, Matteo Trentin, Paul Martens, Daniel Martin, Tanel Kangert, Lars Bak and Julien Simon.
