TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 13 BETTING PREVIEW
The 37.5km route from Bourg-Saint-Andéol to La Caverne du Pont-d’Arc is not at all flat with 660m of climbing, thus favoring a time trialist who can not only power on the flats, but can climb as well. The strong wind that has had a big impact on the last two stages will not disappear for the time trial.
Chris Froome, Tony Martin and Tom Dumoulin are likely to be competing for joint favouritism.
Chris Froome goes into the stage as race leader after a bizarre experience on Mont Ventoux. After getting caught up in an incident with a motorcycle and the large crowds, Froome was forced to run part-way up the climb before eventually getting a replacement Sky bike. The Brit was once one of the best time triallists in the world and if this had been 2013, we would have had no doubt that he would win this stage. However, Froome is no longer the time triallist he once was and in fact he didn’t do a single good TT from June 2014 until May 2016
Tony Martin would have preferred a much flatter course as he is the best in the world on a power course. Anyway, the German will be looking to show his proven time-trial quality and he could be hard to beat if he will climb well up the hills.
Tom Dumoulin took the opening day stage at the Giro d'Italia on home roads, while also recently taking the win at his national championships before the start of the Tour. The Dutchman has not been time trialling at his best this year and he has lost some TTs that he should usually have won, most notably in Paris-Nice and Romandie.
Fabian Cancellara will be looking to take some glory in his final Tour. The Swiss recorded an opening day win in the prologue, and a third on the final day time trial at the Tour De Suisse and can't be ruled out depiste he is not as strong as the past years.
Richie Porte is obviously in the form of his life and this makes him very dangerous for this TT. The Australian has always been one of the best in the world and he was even close to Worlds medals in 2010 and 2011
Rohan Dennis was responsible for the fastest ever average time recorded on the Tour de France when winning the 14km opening stage in 2015. Being a versatile rider, he is suited to this kind of rolling course but the main question is his ability to recover.
Time trial world champion Vasil Kiryienka is another rider that could go for the stage victory while Tejay Van Garderen could have as main target a place on the podium.
Of the other contenders, the other BMC contender Tejay van Garderen could also make up some time, as could Movistar’s Alejandro Valverde.
Thibaut Pinot has revolutionised his time trialing in recent years and should be in the top 10 at the end of the day while Jerome Coppel has always been a good time triallist but unfortunately his last few time trials have been disappointing.
Pure climbers like Nairo Quintana will not suffer too much on a hilly course. The Colombian will will not win but he has improved massively and will not lose too much ground.
