The 14th stage at the Tour de France is a 117.5km run from Tarbes to Col du Tourmalet, the highest Pyrenean summit this year. Julian Alaphilippe will have his hands full defending yellow, especially after going so deep to win Stage 13’s individual time trial. The Frenchman is enjoying the best period of form of his life and we would not be suprised to see him fighting with pure climbers and other GC contenders.
His team-mate Enric Mas is riding a terrific Tour of his own and now sitting in fourth overall. Will he try to attack or chase other GC contenders such as Geraint Thomas?
The current champion looked brilliant at the Planche Des Belle Filles and is expected to repeat that strong performance. Another Brit who can be in the mix is Simon Yates, winner of Stage 12.
Mikel Landa sits far enough down on the General Classification that he might be allowed to escape if he saves his attack for the lower slopes of the Tourmalet.
Thibaut Pinot has shown good form throughout this tour. We should expect the Frenchman to put pressure on his rivals after the echelon-marked Albi stage.
Of course, the Tourmalet also suits climbers like Nairo Quintana, Jacob Fuglsang and Egan Bernal. The latter will be probably fully committed to working for his captain Geraint Thomas. The Dane has struggled in the first week of the Tour because of a crash while the Colombian has been very quiet so far.
Romain Bardet looked far from his best form so far, but he remain a possible contender on a final climb like this as well as Daniel Martin - a probable attacker on the final climb - Steven Kruijswijk and Adam Yates.
In case of a breakaway, the likes of Thomas De Gendt, Rui Costa, Tim Wellens, Tiesj Benoot, Ilnur Zakarin and Warren Barguil are strong candidates to be involved.
Giulio Ciccone and Vincenzo Nibali are not 100% fit and can be overlooked while Rigoberto Uran, Richie Porte and Emanuel Buchmann.
