Ineos have stood out in recent Tours for their ability to use a cross-wind to unsettle their rivals. When both the 2016 and 2017 Tours were in this region, what was then Team Sky pulled off ambushes in the wind to gain useful time on their rivals.
The run-in to the finish is dead straight for the final three kilometres, the road curving slightly with about 400 metres to the line. Anyway, the sprinters' teams must study the series of roundabouts in the final km and positioning will be key in a sprint, considering the twisting finale.
So the usual suspects, Dylan Groenewegen, Elia Viviani and Caleb Ewan, are the riders to watch in Nîmes. They all won one stage so far in this Tour.
Groenewegen crashed on Stage 1, and missed the infamous Stage 10 (Albi). Viviani had a puncture on Stage 7, and ran into bad placement on Stage 1. Ewan has by far been the most consistent, although he is yet to complete his first Tour de France and could be faigued after the Pyrenees.
Who could challenge this trio?
Of course, we can't rule out Peter Sagan for the stage win, while Alexander Kristoff, Sonny Colbrelli, Cees Bool and Nicolo Bonifazio will probably fight for the remaining places.
Dark horses?
A surprise could come from Mike Teunissen (should Groenewegen be involved in a crash or crosswind), Matteo Trentin, Michael Matthews and Jens Debusschere (who was not sprinting in the first two weeks as he was supporting Rick Zabel) while Andre Greipel looks very far from his best from.
The likes of Cristophe Laporte, Rick Zabel, Jasper Philipsen, Giacomo Nizzolo are the sprinters who didn't reach stage 16, along with Wout Van Aert, who abandoned after a bad crash in the Time Trial.
GC leader Julian Alaphilippe is beginning to look vulnerable. He will hope for an easy stage with no crosswinds, giving him another day in yellow and more time to recover before the Alps.
