TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 19 BETTING PREVIEW
Stage 19 begins at the base of an uncategorized 8.5km climb at 7%. The first category climb of the Col de la Forclaz de Montmin averages out at just under 7% for 10 kilometres, with steep sections of above 15 per cent. Then the riders will turn around to go up the category 1 climb of Col de la Forclaz de Montmin (9.8km, 6.9%) and the category 2 climb of Col de la Forclaz de Queige (5.6km, 7.8%). Attacks are sure to come on the Category 1 Côte des Amerands/Le Bettex (9.8km at 8%) finishing climb; it was here, at the 2015 Criterium du Dauphiné, that Chris Froome dispatched American Tejay van Garderen to take the overall victory. This is a short, intense stage that comes on the heels of two hard days in the Alps, so expect a breakaway to be given a long leash by the already-tired peloton. It will take a very strong team to bring them back. Only Astana, Sky and maybe Movistar have the means to do so but there is no guarantee that they want to do so. Anyway, it is one of the last chances for the rest of the GC contenders to make inroads into Froome's lead in the general classification.
Obviously, if it does come down to a GC battle Chris Froome will be hard to beat. No one has managed to drop the Brit yet and we are left with the impression that he hasn’t really shown his real strength yet.
Fabio Aru, Richie Porte and Romain Bardet all recorded very good times in the Individual Time Trial on Thursday and they all look to be going in the right direction heading into the next two stages. If Bauke Mollema, Daniel Martin and Adam Yates continue to fade—and these three continue to surge—we could see another GC reshuffling before the race hits Paris.
We expect an attack from Movistar duo Nairo Quintana and Alejandro Valverde. They could finally try to attack from a long distance, maybe risking on the technical descents. Team Sky should be able to control this attack as Quintana and Valverde are not enjoying a good period.
Ilnur Zakarin showed himself very capable when winning Stage 17 and a case can be made for Rafal Majka and Jarlinson Pantano on similar grounds. We expect all three riders to be involved in a large breakaway along with Thomas De Gendt, Serge Pauwels, Kristijan Durasek, Pierre Rolland, Alexis Vuillermoz and Julian Alaphilippe.
Another possible contender is Vincenzo Nibali. The Italian has clearly indicated that he wants to win a stage and this is a good opportunity for him.
Furthermore Team Sky could decide to send someone in the breakaway: Mikel Nieve, Mikel Landa and Sergio Henao are the candidates since Wouter Poels is likely to help Chris Froome until the final kilometers of the final climb.
