TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 20 BETTING PREVIEW

Stage 20 was originally 130 kilometres long with a 4,450 vertical metres and four categorised climbs. Due to difficult weather condition, only the HC ascent of Val Thorens will remain in terms of jersey classification points, with King of the Mountains points available at the top of the summit finish.

The first category climb to Cormet de Roselend and the second category Côte de Longefoy will both be removed from the parcours.

Val Thorens is a particular kind of ascent. It’s the Tour de France’s longest climb at 33.4 kilometres (with 1800m elevation gain in one go), but it averages just 5.9%, thanks to several flat sections and slight downhills.

It's the final battle for GC and polka dot jersey contenders so we expect fireworks.

Romain Bardet and Tim Wellens will be locked in a battle for the KOM jersey as they are separated by just 12 points. Anyway, with a such short route, GC contenders will not give too much space to breakaways.

Egan Bernal is the obvious favourite as he has shown to be the strongest climber on the Iseran on Friday. His team-mate Geraint Thomas is now the number two in Team Ineos and will probably chase dangerous attackers.

Both Emanuel Buchmann and Steven Kruijswijk have announced they were gonna attack on the final climb, since they are fighting for the podium.

Julian Alaphilippe may make one, long-shot attempt to regain the yellow jersey he lost to Bernal on Friday. He is explosive, so we expect him to try to recover the 45" gap from Bernal on the Val Thorens climb. Time bonus will be a good reason to keep things tight.

Warren Barguil, Rigoberto Uran and Vincenzo Nibali looked good before Friday's stage was halted by a hailstorm and a landslide about 20km from the finish but they all lack explosivity that is needed in this kind of stage.

The shorter run is tailor made for riders such as Alejandro Valverde, Simon Yates and Daniel Martin. Anyway, the Spaniard could run as support for Mikel Landa, who is targeting a top 3 finish overall, while his team-mate Nairo Quintana could go for the stage win.

Dark horses?

Thomas De Gendt has been quiet in the last few days and could try to upset the favourites. The likes of Rui Costa, Lennard Kamna, Alexey Lutsenko and Damiano Caruso could be the surprise package of the penultimate stage.
