TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 5 BETTING PREVIEW
Stage 5 features six categorized climbs, including four in the final 45km. The final climb, the Category 3 Col de Font de Cère, summits just 2.5km from the finish. The finish itself is on an uphill section into Le Lioran. It will not end with a bunch sprint but probably there will be a sprint for the line from a group of about 20-30 riders. The main protagonists for Stage 5 could be the same as for Stage 2. Peter Sagan is once again the favourite number one for this stage. His usual sprint rivals - Cavendish, Kittel and so on.. - will probably be dropped on the earlier climbs. Anyway, if the General Classification contenders decide to put their teams on the front and press the pace, this stage could be to tough for Sagan as well.
There's no doubt that Alejandro Valverde will be able to maintain contact with the leaders when ascending the final Col de Font de Cere. He finished 3rd on stage 2 but the extra climbing here will work in his favour. He finished behind Alaphilippe but in that sprint, the Spaniard had to close a gap.
Julian Alaphilippe was very impressive on Sunday when Sagan narrowly pipped him for the win in an uphill sprint. The Frenchman is one of the fastest riders in the world in this kind of stages but he would need to outdistance Sagan.
Dan Martin was 4th on stage 2 proving that he still has one of the best uphill sprints. He is an interesting profile for this one as the finale will be a lot harder and this favours him even more..
Greg Van Avermaet is another probable contender. He has been very disappointing so far, but he could have targeted this stage since the start of the Tour.
Edvald Boasson Hagen has won mountain stages in the Tour in the past and he climbed really well at the Dauphiné. Anyway, he should not be able to survive with the GC contenders if the pace is high.
Dark horses?
Michael Matthews, Joaquim Rodriguez and Alexis Vuillermoz will all have chances at big odds. Tom Domoulin is fast in this kind of uphill sprint but his best chance is probably to anticipate the favourites. Stephen Cummings will be released from his usual duties of assisting Mark Cavendish and could be in the mix.
The likes of Wilco Kelderman, Simon Gerrans and Tony Gallopin also deserve a mention.
