This stage features seven categorized climbs and a tough finish in Saint-Étienne. After two hard days in the Vosges followed by a sprint in the longest stage of the Tour, this is a good day for a breakaway. Riders will come up against the Croix de Montmain, the Croix de Thel, the Croix Paquet, the Croix de Part and the côte d’Aveize. The final côte of the day is the Côte de Jalliere (1.9 km averaging 7.9%). Then, riders will descend towards the finish in Saint-Étienne, with the final 3 kilometers being lumpy until the flamme rouge.
Trek–Segafredo will have its hands full defending Giulio Ciccone’s yellow jersey, especially with Julian Alaphilippe and Dylan Teuns nipping at the Italian’s heels on the General Classification and a time bonus available at the top of the Côte de la Jaillière, 12.5K from the finish.
Probably, we will find Michael Valgren on the attack here, as well as Greg Van Avermaet, Matteo Trentin, Sonny Colbrelli, Xandro Meurisse, Mateo Mohoric and Wout Van Aert.
But the list of riders who can look for a glory day is very long.We can perhaps write off the French ones who may be keeping their powder dry for Bastille Day.
Other possible contenders?
Max Schachmann has probably earned the chance to try to win a stage. Rui Costa usually is a good name in this kind of stages and both Peter Sagan and Michael Matthews can stay with pure climbers and look for a win in a reduced sprint.
Oliver Naesen, Soren Kragh Andersen, Alessandro De Marchi, Alexey Lutsenko, Alberto Bettiol and Tiesj Benoot are other suggested long shots.
