TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 8 BETTING PREVIEW
The course brings the riders over 181.5km from Rennes to the top of the Mur de Bretagne, a category 3 climb (2km, 6.9%). It has a very steep first part, with the first 500m averaging 10.1% and the next 500m% averaging 9.5%. Then it gets significantly easier with 500m of 5.5% and the final 500m are almost flat with a gradient of just 2.4%.
In 2011, it came down to a photo finish between Cadel Evans and Alberto Contador with the Australian celebrating the win. It's a very hard stage to predict as many teams will spend just the smallest amount of energy because there is a team time-trial on Sunday. It could be a good day for a breakaway.
If Peter Sagan decides to give his 100%, is the favourite number 1 for the win. Behind him, we see Valverde, Van Avermaet and Daniel Martin, thre formidable winner candidates for this finale.
Tony Gallopin and Joaquim Rodriguez are two possible contenders. The French rider really underlined on the Mur de Huy how well he is riding. That day the 'Purito' was the best and conquered the stage. Anyway, Gallopin is third in GC and could be controlled by the yellow jersey ChrisFroome. The Brit and Nairo Quintana will probably save energies for Sunday while AlbertoContador and VincenzoNibali should try to do something. Gallopin's teammate Tim Wellens is another Lotto Soudal strong contender for this stage.
With Michael Matthews suffering from an injury, Simon Gerrans and Michael Albasini have left the race, Orica-GreenEdge will now look to Simon Yates. A kilometer at over 9% might just be too much to ask of John Degenkolb while Rui Costa has already show his skill on this kind of finale.
Tejay van Garderen, Robert Gesink, Bauke Mollema and Romain Bardet are other riders we can't rule out as well as Zdenek Stybar who has already won a stage.
As to probable escapees, we mention Cyril Gautier, one of the most aggressive riders in the peloton and he is a master in picking the right breakaway. Pierre Rolland and Daniel Navarro have shelved his GC ambitions and could be probable attackers from the long distance as well.
If you are looking for long shots, you can back the tasty odds of Vuillermoz, van Garderen and Arredondo.
