2016 CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: MEN'S ROAD RACE PREVIEW
The men’s course has been altered since it was first presented to the world in February 2015. The new course will see the peloton head into the desert for 151km, using part of the route from the Tour of Qatar’s opening stage from this year. The race then returns for several laps of a local circuit.
Defending champion Peter Sagan is the ante-post favorite and has been in supreme form in his year in the rainbow jersey. While he lacks a full-strength team, he demonstrated in Richmond last year, and at the European Championships last month, that he can win from almost any scenario. He has the tactical nous to compete with faster riders and he will not be troubled if the winds whip up.
Mark Cavendish is the 2nd favourite with many bookmakers for the men’s road race, having won four stages of the Tour de France and a silver medal at the Olympic Games.
Germany have the strongest team, with Andre Greipel as the best pick of a line-up that also includes Marcel Kittel (who is lacking form with only one win in the past two months) and John Degenkolb.
Alexander Kristoff was so successful in recent Tours of Qatar and won a similar stage of the race earlier this season. He will lead a strong Norwegian contingent that also includes Edvald Boasson Hagen.
Fernando Gaviria has enjoyed a successful first year in the World Tour peloton with Etixx-QuickStep, and took victory at Paris-Tours on Sunday to prove his form ahead of the World Championship.
France are blessed with plenty of sprinting talent, led by Nacer Bouhanni and Milan-Sanremo winner Arnaud Demare.
If the winds whip up on Sunday, Tom Boonen will go from being a dark horse to a serious contender, and Belgium certainly have the riders to make the racing hard in Doha.
Olympic champion Greg van Avermaet is another possible outsider, for starters, while Jens Debusschere offers another sprinting option.
Olympic omnium champion Elia Viviani and Giacomo Nizzolo lead an Italian team looking for their first rainbow jersey in eight years while Aussie boys Caleb Ewan and Michael Matthews, and the in-form Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen are other possible contenders.
