MICHAEL VAN GERWEN vs PHIL TAYLOR: Betting preview
Michael van Gerwen survived a scare from countryman Raymond van Barneveld, registering a hard-fought 5-4 success, landing 11 maximums and averaging over 102 to Barney’s 98. MVG also struggled against Gerwyn Price in the last 16 round. The Dutchman was 2-0 up but risked to go 2-3 befdore to secure a 4-2 victory. In the first two matches, Van Gerwen dropped just a single set, having whitewashed James Wilson 4-0 and annihilated Christian Kist 3-1 in the opening round.
Rob Cross held off a spirited fightback from Dimitri Van den Bergh to win a thrilling quarter-final match 5-4. Cross, who averaged 97.13 to Dimi’s 98.60, had led 4-1 before Van den Bergh came back to take it to a decider. IN previous rounds, 'Voltage' beat John Henderson 4-1, Michael Smith 4-3 and Seigo Asada 3-0. A year ago, Rob Cross was a virtual unknown before winning the Challenge Tour, and has embarked on a season that will end with him in the world's top 10.
Van Gerwen was not at his best in the match against Raymond van Barneveld and that will give hope to Cross, who has lost seven of his eight direct encounters against the Dutchman this year. In two of these clashes, Cross gave MVG two very close games at the Grand Slam of Darts, missing match darts in the group stages before pushing him hard in the quarter-finals.
