Michael Van Gerwen survived a scare in the last-16 round against Geerwyn Price. The Dutchman was 2-0 up but risked to go 2-3 bedore to secure a 4-2 victory. MVG averaged just over 100, but hit 12 180s and a maximum 170 checkout. Prior to that, Van Gerwen had dropped just a single set on route to the last 16, having whitewashed James Wilson 4-0 and annihilated Christian Kist 3-1 in the opening round. He averaged 107.40 in the first two round, with a checkout percentage of 62.2%.
Raymond van Barneveld has been impressive in this tournament so far, he averaged 100+ in his 3 wins over Richard North, Kyle Anderson and Van Der Voort. Against his fellow countryman VVDV, Barney reeled off nine straight legs for a 4-1 victory. And that was a few days after pummelling Richard North 3-0 with a 102 average.
Van Barneveld produced a superb performance to win 4-3 in 2016, but Van Gerwen avenged the loss with a 6-2 demolition last year. In that match MVG averaged 114.05, Barney 109.34 - the highest losing average in a World Championship match. In the most recent direct match, Van Barneveld defeated MVG a few months ago at the Champions League of Darts.
