Wales have won 20 of their last 23 matches against all opponents

Wales survived a huge scare against France in the semifinals. They struggled to find any fluency against their European rivals and were undoubtedly fortunate to edge to a 20-19 quarter-final win since they were 12-0 down inside 10 minutes and 19-10 in arrears at half time. French lock Sebastien Vahaamahina was sent off for a blatant elbow on Wales’ flanker Aaron Wainwright that turned the game. Prior to that, the Dragons finished top of Pool D, having won all 4 of their games against Georgia (43-14), Australia (29-25), Fiji (29-17) and Uruguay (35-13).

Wales change three players as veteran Leigh Halfpenny and Ross Moriarty and both come in. Centre Jonathan Davies has been passed fit after a knee problem, though, and head coach Gatland is optimistic his side can defy the odds to earn a shot at the Webb Ellis Cup. Liam Williams and Josh Navidi both ruled out of the remainder of the tournament.

Wales Starting Line-up

15. Leigh Halfpenny, 14. George North, 13. Jonathan Davies, 12. Hadleigh Parkes, 11. Josh Adams, 10. Dan Biggar, 9. Gareth Davies; 1. Wyn Jones, 2. Ken Owen, 3. Tomas Francis, 4. Jake Ball, 5. Alun Wyn Jones (c), 6. Aaron Wainwright, 7. Justin Tipuric, 8. Ross Moriarty

Replacements: 16. Elliot Dee, 17. Rhys Carre, 18. Dillon Lewis, 19. Adam Beard, 20. Aaron Shingler, 21. Tomos Williams, 22. Rhys Patchell, 23. Owen Watkin.

South Africa have lost the last four matches against Wales

South Africa put paid to Japan’s incredible world cup run with an assured display that saw them run out 26-3 winners over the host nation, despite only leading 5-3 at half-time. Since losing their opening match to New Zealand (23-13), the Springboks have looked a complete team and put in authoritative performances. Victories over Namibia (57-3), Italy (49-3) and Canada (66-7) saw South Africa finish as runners up in Pool B. They arguably have the best defence in the world. They have scored 30 tries and conceded 3 so far.

The Springboks have lost an attacking weapon, with Cheslin Kolbe’s ankle keeping him out. Sbu Nkosi starts in his place but it will be a huge blow given Kolbe’s renowned game-breaking and try-scoring ability. Tendai Mtawarira is the only member of the starting XV who also started the 2011 World Cup group stage match against Wales. Frans Steyn, who started at 15 eight years ago, is on the bench for this match.

South Africa Starting Line-up

15. Willie le Roux, 14. Sbu Nkosi, 13. Lukhanyo Am, 12. Damian de Allende, 11. Makazole Mapimpi, 10. Handre Pollard, 9. Faf de Klerk, 1. Tendai Mtawarira, 2. Bongi Mbonambi, 3. Frans Malherbe, 4. Eben Etzebeth, 5. Lood de Jager, 6. Siya Kolisi, 7. Pieter-Steph du Toit, 8. Duane Vermeulen

Replacements: 16. Malcolm Marx, 17. Steven Kitshoff, 18. Vincent Koch, 19. RG Snyman, 20. Franco Mostert, 21. Francois Louw, 22. Herschel Jantjies, 23. Frans Steyn.
