Costa Rica vs Germany Betting Preview
Costa Rica sit third in the Group E having conceded seven goals to Spain (7-0) in the debut match and surprisingly won 1-0 against Japan in the second group stage match. Courtesy to that victory, Los Ticos are in with a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.
In order to advance, they must beat Germany and hope that Spain better Japan or it finishes level in the other Group E game. The central American side can also progress with a draw if Japan are beaten by Spain.
Germany sit dead last with just one point after two games, having suffered a bloody 2-1 defeat at the hands of Japan in the opening match and managed to earn a late draw against Spain (1-1) last time out, courtesy of a Niclas Fullkrug's 83rd minute equaliser.
Hansi Flick's men must beat Costa Rica at Al Bayt, and rely on Japan failing to beat Spain, if they are to qualify from Group E. History is on their side – Germany have won six of their eight World Cup matches against CONCACAF nations.
Best Odds
The four-timeworld champions are the heavy favourites with the top betting sites heading into their final match of the group stage. Bookmaker STS are offering Germany to win at 3/25. The best price for Costa Rica to upset Die Mannschaft is 29/1 at William Hill, while the draw is offered at 11/1 with 10Bet.
Probable Line-Ups
Costa Rica (5-4-1): Navas; Fuller, Duarte, Vargas, Watson, Oviedo; Torres, Borges, Tejeda, Campbell; Contreras
Centre-back Francisco Calvo picked up his second booking of the tournament against Japan and will serve a one match ban here. Juan Pablo Vargas should replace him, with the 21-year-old Daniel Chacon providing a further option. Up front, Anthony Contreras should get the nod over Jewison Bennette for the lone striker role in a 5-4-1 starting system. Joel Campbell retaining his starting berth as offensive winger while Yeltsin Tejeda, Celso Borges and Gerson Torres completing the midfield.
Germany (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Klostermann, Sule, Rudiger, Raum; Kimmich, Gundogan; Gnabry, Musiala, Sane; Fullkrug
Leroy Sane played his first 20 minutes of the tournament against Spain and is pushing for a start. Niclas Fullkrug is another candidate to feature from the off after coming from the bench to earn a crucial point against La Roja. Jamal Musiala ad Serge Gnabry are expected to retain their starting berth behind the lone striker. Hence, Ilkay Gundogan should drop into a deeper role - forcing Leon Goretzka out of the team in the process. At the back, Lukas Klostermann and Nico Schlotterbeck are in contention to replace Thilo Kehrer on the right.
Costa Rica v Germany Predictions
Costa Rica have had one shot on target all tournament, and were lucky to earn all three points against Japan through it. It is difficult to see that luck carrying over for Costa Rica against a German side who have to go all out for the win.
As a result, we back Germany to comfortably beat Costa Rica. Anyway, we don't expect a wide margin victory as the bookies are predicting, and we back Costa Rica +4 in the European Handicap betting market.
The 3-0 could be the correct score.
Backing Fullkrug to score any time on Thursday could also be worth it, as well as a punt on Germany to score in both halves.
