Croatia vs Brazil Betting Preview
Brazil topped their group with six points, finishing level with Switzerland but with a superior goal difference. After beating both La Nati (1-0) and Serbia (2-0), the Seleçao suffered a 1-0 loss against Cameroon. Anyway, Tite's men had already secured qualification to the knock-out stage and many regular starters were rested. In the last-16 round, Brazil trashed South Korea 4-1, scoring all four goals in the first 30 minutes.
Croatia were less convincing in the last-16 round as they only overcame a tricky Japan side on penalties, after regular and extra time finished 1-1. Ivan Perisic cancelled out a first-half strike from Daizen Maeda, and goalkeeper Dominik Ivakovic was super in the shootout saving three of four penalties kicked by the Samurai Blue. The Balkan nation also drew two of their three group stage matches - two 0-0 against Morocco and Belgium - and beat Canada 4-1.
In terms of direct encounters, this will be a rematch of the opening game of the World Cup in Brazil in 2014. On that day, Brazil ran out 3-1 winners. The Seleçao have beaten Croatia on three of the four occasions they have met previously, with the remaining match finishing in a draw.
Best Odds
According to UK betting sites, Tite's men are huge favourites to win the quarter-final tie in 90 minutes. Brazil are 4/11 to win with BetUk while Croatia are 44/5 with VBet to shock the world. The draw is available at 4/1 with Betfred.
Probable Line-Ups
Croatia (4-3-3): Livakovic; Juranovic, Lovren, Gvardiol, Sosa; Modric, Brozovic, Kovacic; Kramaric, Petkovic, Perisic
Luka Modric did come off in the second half against Japan but the former Ballon D'Or is expected to feature from the off. Borna Sosa, Croatia’s left-back, missed the win over Japan because of illness, but should be fit enough to return in place of Borna Barisic. Up front, Ivan Perisic will play in the attacking trio alongside Andrej Kramaric and one between Marko Livaja and Bruno Petkovic. The highly rated Josko Gvardiol will flank Dejan Lovren at the heart of the back, while Mateo Kovacic and Marcelo Brozovic will retain their starting berth in the middle of the park.
Brazil (4-2-3-1) Alisson; Danilo, Silva, Marquinhos, Militao; Casemiro, Paquetà; Neymar, Raphinha, Vinicius Jr; Richarlison
Brazil will be without Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus and defender Alex Telles. Neymar didn’t feature in the last two group games but started against South Korea and netter the fourth goal on penalty. The PSG star will lead the line alongside Richarlison, Raphinha and Vinicius Jr. in a 4-2-3-1 starting system. No changes are expected in midfield, where Casemiro and Lucas Paquetà featuring from the off, adn Man UTD's Fred providing a further option. Alex Sandro missed the win against South Korea, so if he’s not fit Danilo will continue at left-back.
Croatia v Brazil Predictions
Croatia have proven tough to beat and rock solid at the back, having conceded just two goals so far. They have lost only one of their last 20 games across all competitions since Euro 2020.
Brazil have been knocked out at the quarter-final stage in three of the last four World Cups, losing to European trio France, Netherlands and Belgium, while in 2014 they lost 7-1 (at home) against Germany in the semis.
Anyway, Croatia have been less brilliant than four years ago (when they finished runner-up in Russia), and their pair of scoreless group-stage draws proved they don't have enough in the attack to compete with Brazil.
It will not be an easy match for the Canarinhos, but we expect another solid performance by Neymar & co., and we back Brazil to win 2-0 or 3-0.
As to goalscorers, Vinicius Jr. is our pick as the youngster can outduel both Croatia's left backs.
