England vs France Betting Preview
England enter this clash on the back of a solid 3-0 win over Senegal in the round of 16. As a result, they are unbeten in four World Cup matches so far and have scored 12 goals and conceded just two - in the opening game won 6:2 against Iran. That victory was followed by a goalless stalemate with USA and a comfortable 3-0 win over Wales.
France are not undefeated in the competition. Les Blues have surprisingly lost the third group stage game against Tunisia (1-0), when head coach Didier Deschamps decided to rest many of his regular starters. The French national team returned to winning ways by beating Poland 3-1 in the last-16 round, courtesy of brace scored by Kylian Mbappè, who now lead the goalscoring chart with 5 goals netted. While the current World Champions look unstoppable in attack, defense remains a concern as Deschamps' men are yet to keep a clean sheet at this tournament.
As to direct encounters, England hold the upper hand in terms of winning record across previous meetings against France, having defeated Les Blues in 17 out of 31 meetings. Anyway, the Three Lions have won just one of the last eight matches against Les Blues. The most recent encounter was a friendly at the Stade de France in 2017, ending in a 3-2 victory for the home side.
This will be the first meeting between England and France during the knockout stages of the men's World Cup.
Best Odds
Betting sites have installed France as the favourites. France are 29/20 to win with Betfred. The Three Lions are slight underdogs at 43/20 with Unibet. VBet are offering 30/13 for the tie to head to extra time.
Probable Line-Ups
England (4-1-4-1): Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Bellingham, Rice; Saka, Henderson, Foden; Kane
The biggest question for England will be the status of Raheem Sterling, who travelled home to care for his family after a burglary at his residence. Jude Bellingham might play in the offensive midfield trio behind Harry Kane once again, alongside the wingers Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden (who are favorites over Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish). As a result, Jordan Henderson will likely flank Declan Rice in the middle of the park. At the back, Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier are in contention for the right-back spot, with the Man City's player favorite to start because his speed can match Mbappe's one.
France (4-3-3): Lloris; Koundé, Varane, Upamecano, T. Hernandez; Rabiot, Tchouaméni, Griezmann; Dembélé, Giroud, Mbappé
Current top-goalscorer Kylian Mbappe has sparked concern among the France camp after missing Tuesday's training with an injury but we expect the PSG star to recover in time and lead the line, alongside Olivier Giroud, Ousmane Dembelè and Antoine Griezmann. In midfield Adrien Rabiot and Aurelien Tchouaméni will feature from the off, while Dayot Upamecano is expected to partner Raphael Varane at the heart of the back. At right back, Jules Koundè should get the nod over Benjamin Pavard.
England v France Predictions
With both teams in good form, England vs. France promises to be a thrilling contest.
Les Blues will have the edge on the wings, where Mbappè and Dembele will terrorise Luke Shaw and Kyle Walker (who had a disappointing night against Senegal despite the 3-0 win).
With N'Golo Kantè and Paul Pogba out injured, England will have huge advantage in midfield, where Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson could outperform Rabiot and the 22-year-old Tchouameni.
As a result, we expect both teams to score and the match to go to extra-time.
The scoreline we pick in the Correct Score market is a 2-2 draw. As to goalscorers, all eyes will be on star-man Kylian Mbappè, but this will leave more spaces and chances to Olivier Giroud.
