England vs Senegal Betting Preview
England topped Group B after comfortably beating Wales 3-0 on Tuesday evening, finishing with seven points in three games. Prior to that, the Three Lions hammered Iran 6-2 and managed to draw 0-0 against USA. It has been a solid campaign so far for Gareth Southgate's men, with back-to-back clean sheets and the highest scoring attack so far.
Senegal managed to beat Ecuador 2-1 on Tuesday to finish second in Group A, which also contained Netherlands and Qatar. In the first two games, the African champions lost their opener to the Dutch national team due to two late goals and beat host Qatar 3-1. Despite losing their best player Sadio Manè fewe days before the start of the competition, the Lions of Teranga continue the form they showed to win their maiden Africa Cup of Nations crown this year.
England have never faced Senegal but head into the game unbeaten against African opposition at the World Cup finals.
Best Odds
England are overwhelming favourites to win according to both top and new betting sites in the UK (best price is 4/7 with BetUk). Senegal are the underdogs at 7/1 with SpreadEx while Betfred value the draw in 90 minutes at 3/1.
Probable Line-Ups
England (4-3-3): Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Mount, Rice, Bellingham; Saka, Kane, Sterling
England are set to have a fully fit squad for this match, barring Ben White's early return home because of personal reasons. Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford impressed against Wales and are in contention with Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling for a starting berth in attack, alongside Harry Kane. Jude Bellingham though could be recalled into the midfield in place of Jordan Henderson. In defense, Kyle Walker’s fitness is a concern and Kieran Trippier should get the nod over Man City's right back.
Senegal (4-3-3): E. Mendy; Sabaly, Koulibaly, Diallo, Jakobs; N. Mendy, Ciss, P. Gueye; Ndiaye, Dia, I. Sarr
The AFCON champions don't have a full squad to choose from. In addition to their talisman Sadio Manè, Cheikhou Kouyate is likely still missing after being stretchered off against the Netherlands, while Idrissa Gana Gueye is suspended. Boulaye Dia will spearhead the attack, flanked by Watford's Ismaila Sarr and Iliman Ndiaye. The likes of Pape Gueye, Nampalys Mendy and Pathè Ciss will start in the middle of the park. Chelsea's Kalidou Koulibaly will lead the four man backline while his club mate Edouard Mendy will start between the posts.
England v Senegal Predictions
African teams have lost eight of nine World Cup knockout matches against European opponents to date.
Hence, England appear to have the advantage on paper and should come through what looks to be an intriguing contest.
The Three Lions have extra strength in depth, which could prove vital late on, so we will lean towards a narrow win for England, 2-1.
Senegal already conceded twice from headers in this World Cup and Harry Maguire to score anytime is an appealing bet for this reason. The Man UTD centre back went already close to score against Iran.
