Germany vs Japan Betting Preview

Germany have reached at least the semi-finals at four of the five tournaments since the start of this century but their disappointing group stage exit in 2018 – their earliest World Cup departure in 80 years - was their lowest point. Manager Joachim Low was replaced by Hansi Flick after a last-16 loss against England at Euro 2020, and he has registered nine wins, five draws and just one loss across 15 games since he was appointed. Die Mannschaft are unbeaten across their two previous encounters in friendlies against Japan but they never faced the Samurai Blue at the World Cup.

Japan have won only one of their last eight World Cup fixtures, although that sole success – in their Russia 2018 opener against Colombia – was enough to take them through to the knockout stage last time out. Hajime Moriyasu's men were impressive in qualifying, recording 15 wins from 18 games and scoring a whopping 58 goals in the process. Anyway, they pitted their wits against fellow World Cup foes Canada in their warm-up friendly but fell to a 2-1 defeat.

Best Odds

According to UK betting sites, Germany are strong favorites in this contest, with Unibet pricing them at 12/25. Japan are 13/2 with Betfair to upset Die Mannschaft while the draw is backable at 39/10 with Vbet.

Probable Line-Ups

Germany (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Kehrer, Sule, Rudiger, Raum; Kimmich, Goretzka; Hofmann, Musiala, Gnabry; Muller

Flick is considering starting with seven Bayern players against Japan. Leroy Sanè is out through injury and will be replaced by his team mate Jamal Musiala. The likes of Serge Gnabry and Jonas Hoffmann will complete the offensive midfield trio behind the central striker Thomas Muller. Timo Werner will unfortunately miss out on the World Cup due to injury, which leaves Kai Havertz as the only option up top for the squad. The likes of Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka are favorites over Ilkay Gundogan to start in midfield. Niklas Sule will partner Antonio Rudiger at the heart of the back.

Japan (4-3-3): Gonda; Sakai, Tomiyasu, Yoshida, Nagatomo; Shibasaki, Endo, Kamada; Ito, Asano, Minamino

Hajime Moriyasu received plenty of criticism from Celtic fans for omitting Kyoko Furuhashi and Reo Hatate from the 26-man squad. Former Liverpool player Takumi Minamino will lead the attack, alongside Junya Ito and Takuma Asano, while Brighton's Kaoru Mitoma and Takefusa Kubo will provide further options. At the back, the central pair will be formed by Maya Yoshida and Takehiro Tomiyasu, both well know by Premier League fans. Captain Yuto Nagamoto will start at left back while Daichi Kamada and Gaku Shibasaki will feature from the off in the middle of the park.

Germany v Japan Predictions

Germany’s recent form in international play is inconsistent at best. They have failed to keep a clean sheet in seven straight matches that were not friendlies. Die Mannshaft avoided Nations League relegation thanks to a win over Italy and a superb 3-3 draw against England at Wembley Stadium.

On the other side, Japan possesses the talent to put up a fight. They have enough international experience and are very fast-paced team.

Despite that, we believe Germany will get rid of a troublesome opponent Japan in a very entertaining match. Having a block form the same club (7 players play with Bayern Munich) will be a huge advantage. We back the both teams to score option and have a punt on the 3-2 scoreline in the correct score market.

As to goalscorers, Serge Gnabry is our pick to break the deadlock.
