WORLD MATCHPLAY 2015: BETTING PREVIEW As in previous years, the Matchplay adopts a simple knockout format from round one. The number of legs needed to win rises over the rounds with 19 legs in 19 rounds and the final being decided over the best of 35 legs.
Phil Taylor made it seven consecutive titles last July when defying expectations after a stuttering first six months of the year. The Power extended to 35 matches his unbeaten run at Winter Gardens. He's unbeaten at the Winter Gardens since Terry Jenkins beat him in the Semi finals back in 2007, a truly amazing record. Potentially, The Power will have to beat Raymond van Barneveld, Dave Chisnall and Gary Anderson just to make the final, all of whom have had big wins over Taylor in the first six months of 2015.
His toughest opponent is Michael Van Gerwen. The Dutch has never won the Matchplay but he looks to have a straightforward route to the final. MVG has won close to 88% of this matches in 2015 on his way to 12 tournament wins but failed to win the Premier League final and was knocked out in the World Championship semifinal.
Gary Anderson can complete a magnificent 2015 treble if he can win this week and add the Matchplay to his World Champion and Premier League titles. He was a stand-out for Scotland in the World Cup, beating Taylor and Lewis, but being let down by his playing partner Peter Wright. A possible semi final clash with Taylor awaits, but the Scot has beaten "the Power" in very recent times.
James Wade will be difficult to beat, he is a five times finalist, winning once. If any of the main protagonists fail to deliver he will be there to clean up the mess.
Adrian Lewis' form has been inconsistent and his best performances have been in floor events rather than on the big stage. Anyway, he has a fine pedigree in this tournament as he has reached at least the quarter-finals in every renewal since 2011 (semi-finalist 2011, quarter-finalist 2012, runner-up 2013, quarter-finalist 2014).
Peter Wright has rediscovered the poise that saw him finish runner up in 2014’s World Championship while Raymond Van Barneveld had health problems that hindered his play while at the World Cup of Darts and if that situation is repeated he'll under-perform.
Simon Whitlock‘s form in 2015 has been mediocre while Michael Smith has been creeping up the Order of Merit in recent months and goes into this tournament with plenty of confidence having clinched his second European Tour title at the end of June.
Dave Chisnall was brilliant at the Premier League and, along with Kim Huybrechts and Stephen Bunting could be the dark horses of the tournament.
