Augusta National: All You Need To Know

Augusta National is a 7,425-yard Par 72 with lightning fast bentgrass greens. The tournament has never been held past the month of April so it will be very interesting to see if Augusta National plays any differently.

Designed by Bobby Jones and Alister MacKenzie, the course has undergone many changes over recent years.

The club is always looking for ways to tweak the golf course. In recent years, this has typically involved lengthening it by either constructing new tee boxes or purchasing land from the surrounding area to stretch the club’s boundaries.

Augusta is known for huge elevation changes and uneven lies so we are looking for a top iron player that can play all the shots and especially control his distances in the swirling winds that the course is known for.

Driving Accuracy and Distance will be crucial as ever. Six of the last 12 winners have ranked inside the top-six in terms of Driving Distance.

US Masters 2020 Betting Preview: Top Contenders

The third major of this unusual golf season is the US Masters. the first two majors have seen Collin Morikawa's US PGA Championship victory in August and Bryson DeChambeau's US Open success at Winged Foot in September.

Unsurprisingly, it is Bryson DeChambeau (8/1 with William Hill) the clear leader with bookmakers. He has been on a rampage since packing on the pounds and breaking records off the tee. His distance will be surely an advantage at Augusta National.

The world No. 1 Dustin Johnson is 9/1 to win his first green jacket. He has been Top 10 in his past four visits to Augusta but missed in 2017 when he was the pre-tournament favorite due to an injury. He returns after an enforced break after being diagnosed with coronavirus. Prior to that DJ recorded five successive top six finishes, including a win at The Northern Trust.

John Rahm (10/1) surely like this course. He finished a tied fourth at Augusta in 2018 followed by another top ten finish last year. He has two wins since the resumption of play and also finished runner-up in his final preparation event.

Justin Thomas (12/1), Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele (14/1) come next in the betting, with Brooks Koepka and his new driver around the 18/1 mark.

Schauffele finished T2 at Augusta last year and in the top-five in half of his appearances at the majors. He should be considered a top contender here.

Koepka's odds have shortened dramatically over the weekend, after a brilliant finish at the Houston Open. He could rise again at a major after a a period in which he struggle with injuries.

Tiger Woods (45/1 with Bet365) is the defending champ. He missed the cut at Winged Foot and finished T72 at the Zozo Championship last month in his only two events of the new PGA Tour calendar.

Francesco Molinari, who had a two-shot lead after 54 holes last year before struggling on Sunday, could be one to follow. His 15th place finish last week means that the Italian is back.

Patrick Reed comes into this week with a run of four consecutive results of 14th or better. He impressed at the recent Zozo Championship and crucially has the experience of having already won at Augusta.

Matthew Wolff is PGA Tour’s rising star, as he recorded top-five placements in both his major appearances at just 21 years old. He is making his Augusta debut and that is a significant handicap.

Tony Finau is another golfer that has talent, driving distance and short game. His ball flight is ideal for Augusta and he's one of the biggest hitters on Tour. We know he likes this course having managed a T5 and T10 in the last two editions. His recent form is good having made seven Top 10 in his last then major appearances.

Tyrrell Hatton has shown he can play with the big guns on the PGA Tour. He has had four top 10s including a win in his last 6 starts.  His game has never been this good going into The Masters.

US MASTERS LONG SHOTS

Jason Kokrak (80/1) has two top-six finishes in his last two tournaments, including a win at the CJ Cup. He’s a monster off the tee — ranking seventh in driving distance, and this could be a pivotal factor.

Sungjae Im also is 80/1 to win the Green Jacket. He opened the season with a win at The Honda Classic and recorded three straight top-10 finishes earlier this year. We expect him to rediscover form sooner or later.

Hideki Matsuyama (25/1) ranks sixth in this field in SG: Tee to Green and Around the Green stats over the last 50-rounds and has only finished outside the top-30 of a PGA event once since August 1.

Rickie Fowler (70/1) has three straight top 11 finishes at the Masters. He took second at The Masters in 2018 and finished in a tie for ninth a year ago. Fowler missed the cut at the PGA Championship and tied for 49th at the US Open but at such big odds it could be worth a punt.

Paul Casey (70/1) hasn’t done a whole lot since finishing T17 at the US Open, playing just three times, with a T35 at the Zozo Championship his best result. Despite the lack of week-to-week consistency, Casey has played very well in the majors this year and certainly has the required course knowledge to be a contender at Augusta, as he finished T6-T4-T6 here between 2015 to 2017.
