New Zealand vs South Africa betting preview

New Zealand have lost three of their last 13 matches

The All Blacks enter the tournament as the outright favourites but there is the feeling they could be toppled this time after an unconvincing build-up to the competition. The back-to-back world champions were beaten 47-26 by Australia last month and only finished third in this summer’s Rugby Championship. Their campaign comprised of a narrow win in Argentina, a draw at home to the Boks (16-16) and a defeat to the Wallabies in Australia. They did subsequently gain revenge on Australia with a 36-0 win in Auckland to retain the Bledisloe Cup and most recently they rattled up 92 points in a warm up game against Tonga. Anyway, Steve Hansen does not appear to have a completely settled side and has selected the youngest team since the 2011 World Cup final.

The All Blacks have named a side with some notable calls. Aside from the absence of Luke Jacobson (recovering from a concussion) and Brodie Rettalick (suffering a shoulder injury), Hansen will be able to field a pretty strong side. At fly half Richie Mo’unga will start which sees regular no 10, Beauden Barrett named at fullback and Ben Smith thereby on the bench.

New Zealand Starting Line-up

15 Beauden Barrett, 14 Sevu Reece, 13 Anton Lienert-Brown, 12 Ryan Crotty, 11 George Bridge, 10 Richie Mo’unga, 9 Aaron Smith, 8 Kieran Read (captain), 7 Sam Cane, 6 Ardie Savea, 5 Scott Barrett, 4 Sam Whitelock, 3 Nepo Laulala, 2 Dane Coles, 1 Joe Moody

Substitutes: 16 Codie Taylor, 17 Ofa Tuungafasi, 18 Angus Ta’avao, 19 Patrick Tuipulotu, 20 Shannon Frizell, 21 TJ Perenara, 22 Sonny Bill Williams, 23 Ben Smith

South Africa come into the tournament with an unbeaten run stretching back to November

South Africa enter the tournament high on confidence after winning their first ever Rugby Championship title. Subsequent warm up games included a home win over Los Pumas and most recently a 41-7 hiding of host nation Japan. The appointment of Rassie Erasmus has clearly made a massive difference in turning their form around.

South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus made just one change from the starting side that drew with New Zealand in July. Siya Kolis will captain the side at openside flanker in place of Kwagga Smith. He is to be joined by Pieter-Steph du Toit, and Duane Vermeulen in a formidable back-row. The versatile 32-year-old Frans Steyn will cover the centres and act as back-up to starting five-eighth Handre Pollard.

South Africa Starting Line-up

15 Willie le Roux, 14 Cheslin Kolbe, 13 Lukhanyo Am, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Makazole Mapimpi, 10 Handré Pollard, 9 Faf de Klerk, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 6 Siya Kolisi (c), 5 Franco Mostert, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Frans Malherbe, 2 Malcolm Marx, 1 Steven Kitshoff

Replacements: 16 Bongi Mbonambi, 17 Tendai Mtawarira, 18 Trevor Nyakane, 19 RG Snyman, 20 Francois Louw, 21 Herschel Jantjies, 22 Frans Steyn, 23 Jesse Kriel
