Lionel MESSI is the favourite as Group F looks very winnable for Argentina. The Albiceleste should have no problem brushing past Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iran and Nigeria. Anyway, Messi is now a serial goal scorer for Argentina. For many years it was claimed Messi was no good for his national team without the likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Dani Alves at club level. This term the Argentinian talisman has scored 41 goals in 44 appearances.
NEYMAR has a terrific record for the national side having scored 30 goals in just 47 appearances and scored four goals as Brazil won the Confederations Cup in 2013. The hosts have the best attacking play but goals tend to be spread pretty evenly around the Brazilian players.
Luis SUAREZ has been sensational all season in the Premier League and he will be the key man for Uruguay in Brazil in June and July. But he could miss the first two (or three games) as there is an injury doubt surrounding the fitness of the 27-year-old who had keyhole surgery recently to his knee.
Cristiano RONALDO comes into the tournament full of confidence following a Ballon D’Or and a Champions League win and carried his team here with four goals in the play offs against Sweden. Ronaldo’s goal ratio this season has been better than a goal a game. but he is strggling with some physical problem and Portugal is in a very competitive group with Ghana, USA and Germany.
Sergio AGUERO has 21 goals from his 47 International matches but is not sure to be in the starting line-up as he could be in contention with Higuain. The negative for Aguero in this market also is his recent injury record with a number of muscle problems keeping him out of the Man City team at various parts of the campaign in England.
With inexperienced Kevin Volland the only other striker in the squad, Miroslav KLOSE looks set to keep his place in the starting line-up. The veteran forward has scored a total of 14 goals at the previous three World Cup finals.
FRED has been assured of a starting berth for the hosts this summer and could emulate his Silver Shoe feat of the Confederations Cup. With Neymar, Hulk and Oscar playing around him, he could be a good choice.
With Christian Benteke sidelined through an Achilles injury, Romelu LUKAKU will lead his nation's attack. Lukaku is on fire. He scored has scored 15 goals this season for Everton, scored in every friendly so far and could profit of Belgium's magic moment as they will fancy their chances of progressing through a group that contains Russia, South Korea and Algeria.
The naturalised Brazilian Diego COSTA has scored 36 times for Atletico this campaign across all competitions. He is one of the favourites but he's currently injured and is in a side who prefer to play without a central striker.
Because of Suarez’s health problem CAVANI together with Diego Forlan can be the main links in the attack. But the former Napoli's striker will face two of the strongest defensive teams in the group stage, Italy and England.
Mario BALOTELLI's return to Milan has not gone swimmingly but Supermario is cherished in the national set-up and will don the No.9 in Brazil. Ever unpredictable, he could be wonderful or terrible.
Robin VAN PERSIE scored once in 2006 and once in 2010, but he's very much the main man now and, as he has shown with Manchester United, is capable of scoring whilst having an off-day. His group is very tough with Spain and Chile in the mix.
Olivier GIROUD performances for Arsenal may have split opinion, but scoring 22 goals as a lone frontman for the majority of the season is no easy feat. Anyway, Didier Deschamps might plan to alternate him with Karim BENZEMA as French main striker in Brazil. THe Lyon born striker hasn't been the most prolific for France having scored only 19 goals in 65 appearances.
In a season that ended in Coppa Italia glory for Napoli, Gonzalo HIGUAIN weighed in with a respectable 24 goals from his 44 appearances in all competitions. His form of late for La Albiceleste has also been positive, having scored nine goals (including a hat-trick against Chile) during the qualification phase for this World Cup.
FALCAO is one of the best forwards of the World and Colombia is a very storng team this time. Anyway, the Monaco star adamel Falcao at 40/1. The Colombian striker is not fully fit by the start of the tournament it could be worth a small investment on his likely replacement, Jackson MARTINEZ. The Porto Striker will likely be partnered by Teofilo GUTIERREZ, a forward who scored on six occasions in the South American qualifying group.
Thomas MULLER is not someone getting much attention ahead of the World Cup, but then again neither was he before the last edition of the tournament, and he claimed the Golden Boot in South Africa. He has also enjoyed his best-ever season in terms of goals for Bayern Munich, averaging better than one in every two matches across all competitions.
Wayne ROONEY led England's scoring charts in qualifying as the Three Lions netted 31 goals in just 10 games (22 against Moldova and San Marino).
PEDRO was Spain’s highest scorer during qualifying notching four times during the group stages but we can't see him as a top goalscorer here.
Daniel STURRIDGE has been instrumental for Liverpool this season, taking them within touching distance of the Premier League trophy. If England can take their campaign past the group stages, Sturridge could be one of the contenders to take home the Golden Boot.
Bosnia and Herzegovina's qualifying campaign was a roaring success, with Edin DZEKO netting 10 of his side's 30 goals. The Manchester City striker has been pivotal for his club Premier League triumph and is in fine form considering the recent friendlies.
Yaya TOURE hits 24 goals in 49 games for Manchester City - an astonishing record for a central midfielder. He is 31 and may struggle to replicate such potency in the Brazilian heat as he will likely be the penalty taker for his team.
Croatia's Mario MANDZUKIC could be a dark horse. Inter Milan's Mateo Kovacic and VfL Wolfsburg's Ivan Perisic will join Sevilla's Ivan Rakitic and Real Madrid's Luka Modric to craft chances for Mandzukic and Mexico and Cameroon are poor in defense.
Other dark horses? The evergreen Didier DROGBA and Lukas PODOLSKI, or the Chilean penalty taker Arturo VIDAL, who was very impressive with Juventus this term.
